Forum Feature Improvements

Postby Ultra-Gape » Sat Jan 19, 2019 10:20 am

I've posted on many internet forums over the years and sadly this forum lacks a number of features which I think helps improve the user experience and crucially therefore also contributes to making a forum more of an active community. Specifically:

1) A notification system. Most usefully to provide notifications of when a post of mine has been quoted and responded to, but it can also be useful to provide notifications of replies to threads you choose to subscribe to, or when a particular 'followed' user posts. (I note there is a 'Notify me when a reply is posted' option hidden in the Options section below each post but there is no in-forum system for any such notifications to be displayed. I suspect the option does nothing but perhaps it triggers e-mails? I'm trying to remember to tick it to find out but this in itself is a hassle.)

2) The ability to 'like' the posts of another user. I see the forum has a 'karma' counter but this clearly isn't in use. Many modern forums even have a range of quick response like e.g. a LOL type emoji response to something you find funny. Some will no doubt say this is totally unnecessary but I think for most this makes forums a more enjoyable interactive experience, meaning they're more likely to stick around and participate.

I'll be honest I'm very doubtful changes like this are likely to be made but I'd love to be proved wrong :) . Oh, and more emojis would be an improvement too now I think of it!

I miss the ability to mark all threads in a forum as read, without actually having to open them one by one.

I'd like your post if I could...

I think you probably still can? If you go click on 'Board index' at the top left you then get the option to 'Mark forums as read' at the top right. I've not clicked on it to see if it works though.

Having now experimented, subscribing to a thread does result in e-mail notifications of new posts in that thread. I've found it's also possible to set this to be the default for all posts you make via the User Control Panel. However, I'd still MUCH rather see in-forum notifications as are common elsewhere, and I'd much rather be able to choose to just get notifications if someone quotes me rather than just replying to a thread I have previously participated in.

Oh, and should anyone care I see it is possible to subscribe to a thread you haven't posted in via a button at the far bottom left of every page.

Seems, I was blind for months.
I have looked for that and never seen it.
Thank you for your hint :-)
